Full Description

From the old towns to a UNESCO mining city

This private day trip crosses western and central Slovakia. We begin with the historic towns of Trnava and Nitra, then continue into the hills for the main highlight of the day — Banská Štiavnica.

Banská Štiavnica is a former silver and gold mining town, and its whole historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town is built into the hills, so the streets, squares and old mining buildings sit on different levels with views opening at every turn.

This is a longer day and deliberately so — the drive is part of it, and Banská Štiavnica deserves the time. We plan the day so you arrive with enough time to walk, explore and simply enjoy being there.

A UNESCO mining town — and the journey to it.

The Route

Three stops, one UNESCO highlight

  1. 1

Trnava — the city of churches

A university town with a compact centre

We start in Trnava, one of the oldest and most important historic towns in Slovakia.

Its centre is compact and walkable, with churches, squares and old university buildings.

A short walk here is a good way to begin the day.

  2. 2

Nitra — the old city under the castle

One of the oldest cities in Slovakia

Nitra is one of the oldest cities in Slovakia.

The town spreads below its castle hill, with its own quiet historic character.

It is a natural pause on the way east.

  3. 3

Banská Štiavnica — UNESCO World Heritage

A historic mining town in the Štiavnica hills

Banská Štiavnica is the highlight of this trip and the reason we drive this far. The whole historic town is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

It grew on silver and gold. For centuries it was one of the most important mining towns in the region, and that wealth built the churches, squares and burgher houses you walk past today.

The town is built into the hillside, so streets and squares sit at different levels and new views open with almost every turn.

Flexible by design

More than just visiting castles

This trip is not designed as a race from one monument to the next.

You travel in a small private group, so the day can stay flexible and relaxed. We are happy to recommend local food, the best places for photographs, or adjust short stops according to the interests of the group and the time available.

Your vehicle. Your group. Your day.
