Full Description

Two capitals, one day

Budapest is two cities in one — Buda on the hills, Pest on the plain, divided by the Danube and joined by a handful of handsome bridges. Seeing it properly in a day needs a car and someone who knows where to stop.

You travel in your comfortable vehicle with a driver-guide who knows the city, so the day moves at your speed. We start with the wide views from the castle district and work down towards the river and the great public squares.

Because the trip is flexible, nothing is fixed in stone. If you would rather spend longer at the Parliament or find a thermal bath, we simply adjust the route as we go.

Your vehicle. Your group. Your day.

The Route

Three places that define Budapest

  1. 1

Hungarian Parliament — the riverfront landmark

We begin by the Danube on the Pest side, where the Parliament rises straight from the water in a long sweep of spires and arches.

It is the largest building in Hungary, and from the riverside walk you can take in the whole facade and the memorials that line the bank.

It is the best place to understand how the city is arranged around its river.

  2. 2

Buda Castle District — above the Danube

From the river we climb to the Buda side and the castle district, a warren of cobbled lanes and baroque houses perched above the water.

We walk through the old streets past the Royal Palace and the Matthias Church, and stop where the whole of Pest opens up below.

It is the view most people carry home from Budapest.

  3. 3

    Heroes' Square & City Park

We finish at Heroes' Square, the great open plaza at the end of Andrássy Avenue, flanked by the Millennium Monument and the Museum of Fine Arts.

Behind it lies City Park, with its lake, its thermal baths and the fairy-tale Vajdahunyad Castle.

You will have free time here, and a simple arrangement for where to meet again.

Flexible by design

More than a checklist of sights

This trip is not a race from one monument to the next. The route is a framework, and the day is yours to shape.

You travel in a small group, so there is always room to linger somewhere you like and move on from somewhere you do not.

Your vehicle. Your group. Your day.
